As the clock strikes midnight, the Valley will find itself in the “Twilight.”
With sold out screenings and a radio ticket contest on 106.3’s Hot Kiss, the anticipation will finally end as Valley “Twilight” readers brace for the first film adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s vampire romance saga.

“I know it’s already getting sold out,” said 18-year-old Alyssa Fuentes of Harlingen, who waited an hour in line for the saga’s most recent book release. “Everybody’s been ordering them online. I got mine like a week ago. I even took a day off of work.” Read the rest of this entry »

Somebody give Amy Ryan a Golden Globe

December 14th, 2007, 8:41 am by

amyryan.jpg

Actress Amy Ryan was nominated yesterday for a Golden Globe Award for best supporting actress. Ryan’s turn in Ben Affleck‘s directorial debut “Gone Baby Gone” is one of this year’s most memorable performances, and I think she deserves to win.

As a drug-addled unfit mother who would make Britney Spears look like Donna Reed, Ryan delivered an amazing and raw performance that helped make this movie one of the best things on the screen in 2007. It was like Affleck pulled her off the street or out of a bar at noon put her in front of the camera and said, “Yo, you. Talk.” More than that, Ryan creates a character who can be seen as a villain and victim. Check out  this clip to see Ryan in action.

Is Nicole Kidman overpaid?

December 12th, 2007, 7:43 pm by

nicolekidman.jpgThe subversive (who knew!) number crunchers over at Forbes.com just posted their list of Most Overpaid Celebrities. It should come as no surprise that Nicole Kidman is high up on the Forbes list. According to Forbes, for every dollar Kidman was paid for her last few films (excluding “The Golden Compass” and “Margot at the Wedding”), her flicks returned only $8 on average to the studios, making her the most overpaid actress in Hollywoodland.

This is a no-brainer for me, since I’ve never thought of Kidman as a big box-office draw. I don’t know anyone who says, “Hey I can’t wait for that new Nicole Kidman movie to come out.” I’ve also never heard the phrase “It’s great how Nicole Kidman’s one-note acting makes movies so much worse. I love her for that.”

So why do the studios insist on throwing wads of money at the not-so-bankable Kidman? The Forbes story says she earned about $15 million for “The Golden Compass,” and that movie only earned a little more than $20 mil in its first weekend. Her “hits” owe little of their financial success to her contributions. “Moulin Rouge” was popular because of Baz Lurhmann’s colorful visual storytelling and the reinterpretations of all those classic pop songs. “Cold Mountain” banked more on Oscar winning director Anthony Minghella. Meryl Streep and a few other famous female names helped make “The Hours” a hit.

So, is Nicole Kidman overpaid? I say hells yes. Check the Forbes list here .

Shia aint the next Lindsay Lohan

December 12th, 2007, 9:24 am by

shialb.jpgNo, he wasn’t charge with a DUI or caught with cocaine. He didn’t portray a stripper in a widely-panned thriller or crash his Mercedes into a sidewalk. Shia LaBeouf, a former Disney kid like Lindsay Lohan, only committed the crime of hanging out at a drug store while he was a little buzzed.

Misdemeanor criminal trespassing charges were dropped against the young “Transformers” star today. LaBouf was arrested and charged last month in Chicago for refusing to leave a Walgreens.

When news of the arrest first hit, I thought this was the beginning of the end for Shia. It looked like he was following Lohan’s path from talented Disney player to hit movie star to celebrity rehab case. Surprisingly, Shia hasn’t gotten into any other trouble since this mishap and he won’t be spending any time in jail. It looks like he was just out celebrating wrapping production on the new “Indiana Jones” movie and got a little carried away last month. That’s what it looks like anyway. So, Shia LaBeouf’s Hollywood nice guy image is saved … but we’ll be watching.

Bad Hair Day: Gwen Stefani

December 11th, 2007, 8:27 am by

gwenhair.jpg

Is Gwen Stefani working with George Lucas? I don’t pretend to know anything about hair, but this ‘do she was sporting in Las Vegas on Saturday makes her look like she’s auditioning for the role of “Alien Chick #4″ in a crappy “Star Wars” prequel. Those random pudgy chongos scream “I just walked off the set of a bad sci-fi movie.”

I know … I’m mean, but I’m also a fan. “The Sweet Escape” is one of my fav pop songs of the last few years. And how can you not love Gwen, bad hair and all? She’s even doing some good for the San Diego wildfire victims.

Does Hannah Montana make you squeal?

December 10th, 2007, 9:13 am by

hannah-montana-contes_mood.jpgPeople love Hannah Montana she even makes Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich squeal, the AP reports. The good governor took his family to a recent concert featuring real-life Disney idol Miley Cyrus as the fictional pop star Hannah Montana.

“We’re big fans,” Blagojevich told the AP before Saturday’s concert. “I’ve seen every ‘Hannah Montana’ episode.”

I feel less nervous about admitting that I’ve sat through my share of “HM” episodes now that the governor of such a great state has confessed his fandom. My 13-year-old sister digs the series, and I like watching it with her along with “Corey in the House” and other Disney Channel kid fare (except for “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.” Someone smack those obnoxious twins now please!). The show is a dumb but fun slice of tween comedy, and I get a kick out of watching Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley’s dad, play a goofy southern rocker.

Anyway, the character’s popularity is undeniable. The “HM” concerts are the hottest tour ticket right now. Tickets are going for $600 online. For those who can’t afford that, Disney is releasing a theatrical 3-D concert film called “The Best of Both Worlds” on Feb. 1 featuring Cyrus who will perform as herself and as Hannah. The movie will also feature the Jonas Brothers, who might be on their way to the RGV soon.

Will I be in line to catch the concert film? Only if my kid sister asks me to go … but she’s buying the popcorn. Get more info on the concert film here .
